During today’s Financial Earnings Call, WWE Chief Brand Officer Stephanie McMahon discussed recent media accomplishments, including WWE 2K22’s reception. She also brought up the mobile space (games such as SuperCard and Champions), but she kept one of the most exciting revelations for last, stating that WWE recently struck a new agreement in the role-playing game genre, and that it will be announced shortly. We’re unsure whether this refers to a smartphone RPG, a console RPG, or a tabletop role-playing game, but we’re interested in learning more.
After discussing the positive reaction to WWE 2K22, McMahon said that their mobile games are doing well and they recently signed a new contract in the RPG market which will be announced soon.
She still hasn’t said who she made the agreement with or what game it is. However, there are other mobile RPGs out there, and WWE’s success in the smartphone industry suggests that a new mobile RPG might be coming soon. We don’t know if it will be a character-focused turn-based game like Marvel and Star Wars have produced, or something else entirely.
A system that would allow for more true role-playing games would be more alluring to many people. The Know Your Role system from the 2000s was not very popular and WWE has not released an official system for wrestling in a considerable amount of time. Those who have seen UpUpDownDown’s Rollout series are accustomed to seeing WWE superstars enter the realm of role-playing games, so they may have opted to become more active in that area.
I hope we don’t have to wait too long to learn more about what the game will become, regardless of how entertaining it may be.
