Twitter began testing prompts in 2020 to allow users to pause and rethink a potentially negative or offensive response before hitting submit.
Early tests found that when asked, 34% of people revised their initial response or chose not to respond at all.

“For instance, if two accounts often follow and respond to one another, there is a greater probability that they have a stronger understanding of one another’s preferred tone of communication,” Twitter’s Anita Butler and Alberto Parrella said in a joint statement on Wednesday.
Early tests found that when asked, 34% of people revised their initial response or chose not to respond at all.
“After being asked once, on average, people composed 11% less offensive responses in the future,” Twitter said.
When asked, individuals were less likely to receive hostile or harmful responses.
After the initial experiments, the following has been integrated into the processes that determine when and how these reminders are sent:
