Motorola is bringing a new version of its Moto G Stylus 5G in 2022 with a few pleasant features and a higher $499 price tag to match. The G Stylus 5G 2022 edition features a 6.8-inch display with an extremely smooth 120Hz refresh rate, a more powerful Snapdragon 600-series engine, a stabilised main camera, and plenty of built-in storage. Additionally, the business is launching its $399 Moto G 5G in North America. (It was debuted earlier this year in Europe.)

The most visible upgrade to the 2022 G Stylus 5G — not to be mistaken with the Moto G Stylus 4G — is the 120Hz display, which enables smooth animations and scrolling. It features a 1080p LCD display and a 16-megapixel front-facing camera. A 50-megapixel primary camera with optical image stabilisation is located on the rear. Stabilization is not widely available in the midrange class, but it should offer a higher chance of capturing clear images in low-light situations. There is an 8-megapixel ultrawide camera with closeup capability, as well as a 2-megapixel depth sensor.

Additionally, this year’s G Stylus 5G features a Snapdragon 695 5G chipset, an increase from last year’s model’s 400-series processor. Additionally, it comes with 8GB of RAM, which is significantly higher than the normal midrange phone’s 4GB or 6GB. This should result in much improved performance over the 4G version of this phone, which answers our primary criticism of last year’s model: that the improvement was insufficient to justify the increased price.

Apart from that, the phone comes with a 5,000mAh battery, 256GB of storage, support for sub-6GHz 5G (including C-band), a headphone jack, a microSD card slot, and a charger. How’s that for considerate? Naturally, a stylus is included as well, which is kept in the phone and enables more precise handwriting and sketching.

Both phones will come pre-installed with Android 12, and Motorola has committed to one extra OS upgrade.

The Moto G 5G (without the stylus) features a significantly less robust set of specifications. There’s a MediaTek Dimensity 700 processor with 6GB of RAM, a 6.5-inch 720p LCD with a 90Hz refresh rate, and a 50-megapixel primary camera without optical image stabilisation. You still get a 5,000mAh battery, a headphone port, a microSD card slot, and an in-box charger, in addition to the 256GB of built-in storage. That is a reasonably robust feature set for $399.

Both phones will debut with Android 12, with Motorola promising a further OS upgrade. Preorders for the Moto G Stylus 5G begin today; the Moto G 5G will be available on May 19th.
