Mobile data plans might be too pricey. Even if you have a "unlimited" plan, consuming too much data in a single month can result in slower speeds and even fines. This is a problem for users of video-chatting programs such as FaceTime.

FaceTime consumes a significant amount of data. FaceTime does, in fact, require data. In fact, it consumes more data than the majority of other apps. Few things consume more internet bandwidth than streaming FaceTime is a possible data hog.

There are a few things you can do to prevent consuming too much mobile data on FaceTime.

  • The simplest is to connect to a Wi-Fi network before making calls; this way, you'll stream video over Wi-Fi rather than your cellular plan.
  • You can also turn off your camera while on the call, and ask everyone you're speaking with to do the same. This minimizes the amount of video you're streaming, resulting in data savings.
  • Aside from that, the only thing you can do is keep your FaceTime sessions brief and avoid calling more than one person at a time.

How to Check How Much Data FaceTime Consumes

Every app on your iPhone and iPad logs how much data it consumes each month (or "billing period"). These records for the current and previous billing periods can be found in the Settings app.

  • Open the Settings app and select Cellular from the list at the top.
  • Then, scroll down to the list of all your apps and look for FaceTime.

You can view how much data the app has consumed this billing cycle under the app's name. The apps on the list are ordered by how much data they use.

You may also alter whether or not the app is allowed to utilize cellular data by tapping the little switch next to it. If you turn off FaceTime, you won't be able to make any calls until you first connect to Wi-Fi.
